Cruise Lingo 101: OBC (Onboard Credit)

(Or: How to Spend the House’s Money Like a Pro)

If you’ve ever looked at your cruise booking confirmation and seen a line item for OBC, congratulations - you’ve just been handed the maritime equivalent of a gift card.

OBC stands for Onboard Credit. It is "monopoly money" that the cruise line (or your travel agent) drops into your shipboard account to spend however you like. It feels like free money because, well, it is free money. But there are a few rules to this high-seas currency that you need to know before you start ordering rounds of champagne for the whole piano bar.

Cruise Lingo 101: How to Get and Use Onboard Credit (OBC)

Where Does It Come From?

You don’t usually find OBC just lying around on the deck. It’s typically "gifted" to you as part of:

  • A Booking Promotion: "Book this week and get $100 OBC!"
  • A Travel Agent Perk: A "thank you" for booking through them.
  • A "We’re Sorry" Credit: If your shore excursion gets canceled or the Wi-Fi goes down for a day, the ship might toss you some OBC as a peace offering.

The "Use It or Lose It" Rule

This is the most important thing to remember: OBC is not a savings account. On most cruise lines, any credit left in your account at the end of the voyage evaporates into the salty sea air. If you have $5.00 left on the final night, go buy a fancy candy bar or a keychain at the gift shop. Do not - I repeat, do not - let the cruise line take back their "gift."

The Best Ways to Spend "The House's Money"

Since this isn't coming out of your actual bank account, OBC is the perfect excuse to indulge in things you’d normally skip:

  • The "Better" Dinner: Use it to cover the cover charge at a Specialty Restaurant. That steak tastes much better when it’s technically "on the house."
  • The Spa Splurge: Always wanted a hot stone massage but couldn't justify the price? OBC is your best friend.
  • The Photo Gallery: This is the best way to pay for that one formal night photo where everyone is actually smiling and nobody has their eyes closed.
  • The Shore Excursion Upgrade: If you’re $20 short of being able to afford the "Catamaran and Lobster Lunch" tour, your OBC can bridge the gap.

The Insider Secret: Refundable vs. Non-Refundable

Here’s a bit of "Knowledgeable" info for you: Not all OBC is created equal.

  • Non-Refundable: This is the "promotional" stuff. Use it first. If you don't spend it, it’s gone.
  • Refundable: If you put your own cash into your account or had a specific type of overpayment, you can sometimes get the remainder back as a check or a credit to your card.

Pro Tip: Always check your "Account" on the ship's app or at a kiosk on day two. If you see $200 in there that you weren't expecting, it’s time to head to the specialty coffee bar.

Final Words: Enjoy the Windfall

OBC is the cruise line’s way of saying, "Go ahead, treat yourself." Whether you use it to buy a round of bingo cards or a high-end bottle of wine, it adds that extra layer of "vacation mode" to your trip. Just remember to check your balance on the last night - because a zero balance is the only way to win the OBC game!
