Cruise Add-Ons What is Worth It… and What to Skip

Once you know what’s included in your cruise fare, the next question is: which extras are actually worth it? From drink packages to excursions, cruises offer plenty of add-ons - but not all of them are created equal. Here’s a friendly guide to help you decide what’s a treat and what you might skip.

Drink Packages: Use With Care

When they’re worth it: If you love specialty coffee, cocktails, or plan to drink frequently, a package can save money.

When to skip: Casual drinkers, or those who mainly stick to water, tea, and brewed coffee.

💡Tip: Calculate how many drinks you’d need to break even. Sometimes buying individually is cheaper.

Excursions: Explore or DIY?

Worth it: Guided tours that give you insider access, skip-the-line perks, or adventures you can’t do on your own.

Skip it: Expensive shore excursions you could easily replicate independently or explore by foot.

🛠️Quick hack: Ask your travel advisor for the best excursions for your budget and style.

Specialty Dining: Treat Yourself

Worth it: A one-time splurge for a steakhouse, sushi bar, or themed dining night—great for celebrations.

Skip it: Multiple specialty meals per cruise can add up quickly. Pick one or two favorites instead.

Spa & Wellness Packages

Worth it: Massages, facials, or wellness classes can elevate the relaxation factor of your cruise.

Skip it: If your budget is tight, simple onboard amenities like pools, hot tubs, and gyms are included for free.

WiFi & Apps

Worth it: Essential for staying connected with people back home or managing bookings

Skip it: If you’re happy unplugged or just want to check a few messages during port days, consider free or minimal access options.

💡Tip:The cruise line’s app does work while on board - if when on board, you put your phone on Airplane Mode and set the WiFi to the cruise line’s free WiFi.  This makes the App work only.

Pre-Purchased Perks & Photo Packages

Worth it: Bundles that match your travel style and you’ll definitely use (drinks + dining, spa + excursions).

Skip it: Generic packages that include things you won’t touch. Always check the value before buying.

Final Tip: Plan Before You Board

The best way to enjoy add-ons without stress is to decide ahead of time what’s important. A little planning ensures you spend on experiences that truly enhance your trip - and skip the extras that don’t.

When in doubt, your travel advisor can help you sort through the options so you don’t feel like you’re paying for surprises.
